Quantità scarse di questa vitamina possono essere all’origine di diversi problemi. A rischio soprattutto chi prende a lungo certi farmaci, ad esempio per colesterolo, diabete o contro l’acidità di stomaco

È conosciuta come la vitamina «dei vegani», quella che rischia di scarseggiare se si escludono del tutto dalla dieta gli alimenti di origine animale. Ma i deficit di vitamina B12 sono possibili anche in altre situazioni, meno note: un caso è la terapia cronica con alcuni farmaci, come gli antiepilettici, i fibrati per il colesterolo alto, la metformina per il diabete o i diffusissimi antiacidi utilizzati per ridurre l’acidità gastrica, per esempio l’omeprazolo.
